A Very Short Introduction: Information Monopoly
A few weeks ago I found a really interesting book on the library. It is called Globalization A Very Short Introduction (VSI). Last week I went to Oxford and I found at their library that there is a whole collection about these books. You can find VSI to animal rights, intelligence, continental philosophy, Buddha and a lot of interesting subjects.
The one that I am reading right now gives a very complete idea of globalization, analyzing the political, cultural, economic and ideological dimension of globalization.
Today I found a really interesting chart in this book, are just numbers of the American way of life; I learnt that 35 is the number of leisure hours the average American has per week, and 28 is the number of hours the average American spends watching television per week.
But I was really impressed when I found out that 1,483 was the number of US daily newspapers in 2000 and they were just controlled by only 6 companies.
Last week I read that Rupert Murdoch was interested in The Wall Street Journal.
He is already the owner of the conglomerate NewsCorp one of the biggest media corporation in the world.
I am really worried about this whole media empire that he is creating.
There is a huge monopoly on the information field and I am starting to doubt in the objectivity of some newspapers, tv channels and even web sites.
There is a group of young people that create a website called ASK. It is a curious site. They called themselves The Revolucionistas and they are appealing for a new and different search engine.
I don’t know how is everything going to end but I have the impression that every time is even harder to find a really objective source of information that you can really trust.
On the other hand I am not sure if someone should intervein and controlled the monopolies in strategic fields like media.
